CDTE - Tony Eyers CD Product Description: This CD presents traditional Irish and Bluegrass fiddle tunes in a completely new way. The harmonica, normally a blues instrument, becomes the lead voice in these tunes. The result is a unique sound, characterised by harmonies normally heard with twin bluegrass fiddles. • “The last time I heard skill of this level was at the SPAH convention final concert in 1985”, Colin Mort, “Harmonica World”, UK • “I’ve never heard this material played so smoothly on a standard diatonic, Richard Hunter, Leading Harmonica Commentator, USA • “Black Mountain Harmonica is a relentless acoustic onslaught of wonderful sparkling traditional fiddle music played with consummate skill and competence”, John McDougall, “Woodstock”, Australia • “The tone that Eyers captures on this disk is as delightfully different in the harmonica world as his harmonies” Doug Bright, “Heritage Music Review”, USA • “Out of Australia comes an album of authentic fiddle tunes beautifully rendered on harmonica by Tony Eyers”, Rick Beall, www.bluesharp.org, USA Tony Eyers was introduced to the harmonica at Yale University, as an undergraduate. He played blues for many years, then turned to bluegrass and Irish music. The inherent difficulties of the traditional tunes lead him to develop a new tuning system for diatonic harmonicas, which is a key feature of his unique sound. This sound is also shaped by the custom harmonicas used in the recording, which are made by Neil Graham in southern NSW, Australia. Tony Eyers also has played recorder for many years in a professional baroque chamber ensemble. His experience of baroque harmonies and playing styles are reflected in the arrangements and precision of this debut CD, “Black Mountain Harmonica”. Tony Eyers was also a featured presenter at the Bluegrass and Country Harmonica Seminar at SPAH 2005 |
